“Salt Therapy for Respiratory Conditions?”

“If you or your child has asthma, you may think you are doomed to a life of steroids and ventolin inhalers, but there are alternative treatments for asthma and other respiratory conditions. Salt therapy, officially known as halotherapy, has been shown to be beneficial in asthma cases, bronchitis and even cystic fibrosis. Salt pipes, an alternative type of inhaler, can be used in the alleviation of asthma and are suitable for both adults and children.”

“A taste for salt in the history of medicine”

“The healing methods of Hippocrates (460 BC) especially made frequent use of salt. Hippocrates also mentions inhalation of steam from salt-water…We know today that the antiinflammatory effects of inhaled salt provide relief from respiratory symptoms (c). Thus, 2000 years ago, Greek medicine had already discovered topical use of salt for skin lesions, drinking salty or mineralized waters for digestive troubles and inhaling salt for respiratory diseases! …The main effects of salt on the bronchial system are to stimulate secretion, loosen and help eliminate viscous secretions, inhibit inflammation, reduce irritation causing cough, clean the mucous membrane of the kinocilium, and contract (bronchoconstriction) or extend (dilatation) the respiratory ducts.”

“SALT PIPE UNDER THE SCOPE”

“Rock salt has been used for centuries around the world to ease respiratory discomfort. A trial involving asthmatic and allergic patients and those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) showed the saltpipe improved symptoms in more than half of them. During a three week period, 25 of the 50 patients were given a placebo pipe and the others a pipe filled with organic, crystal salt. At the end of the trial, 56% of those using the saltpipe had an improvement in lung function compared to 34% on the placebo pipe. Just under 74% had an improvement in their breathing. "

“PUFF ON A PIPE TO HELP ASTHMA”

"A PIPE filled with salt could offer new hope for Britain's 8 million asthma sufferers. Puffing on the saltpipe draws tiny particles of salt into the lungs, which manufacturers claim boosts natural cleansing processes. Trials in Budapest found three out of four patients improved after using the device for 15 minutes a day. "

“The effect of a dry salt inhaler in adults with COPD”

The fascinating results of this study, originally published in Pneumologia 2007 Jul-Sep; 56(3):124-7 concludes: “35 patients were given dry salt inhalers…and were asked to use them up to 30 minutes per day. Spirometry tests and six minutes walk tests were performed initially and after one, two and three months…RESULTS:…we found out there was a statistically significant improvement in the six minutes walk test values… Dry salt inhaler therapy may prove to be a useful adjuvant therapy in COPD as far as effort tolerance and quality of life are concerned.”

The saltpipe used in ambulant medical attendance

• The Csepel Hospital Outpatients Department in Budapest recommends the use of the saltpipe during the ambulant medical attendance of the patients.” We offer it to them with quite good results… We use the salt pipe in our outpatient health care…. We recommend this pipe for them, because the results are very good as it acts as a kind of a mobile cave therapy. The crystals contained in it promote the dissolution of accumulated matter and make breathing easier. Children can start using it from an age when they can be taught how to breathe the air through the pipe containing the crystals .As a result of its efficiency it is recommended for those who suffer from chronic respiratory disorders, allergies and for smokers and anyone who suffers from irritating respiratory problems .”

”Effect of dry sodium chloride aerosol on the respiratory tract of tobacco smokers”

“The aim was to study influence of dry sodium chloride aerosol (DSCA) on the respiratory tract of tobacco smokers…. 88% of smokers of TG by the end of inhalation course reported easier and/or decreased cough, changes in the character of sputum, which became lighter and clearer. Improvement in the character of sputum was noted only 22% volunteers of PG…DSCA relieves the main symptoms (cough and sputum), improve local defence mechanisms and resistance of mucous membranes of tobacco smokers owing to decreased colonization activity of pathogenic microgerm.”

”A novel and effective low-cost treatment for cystic fibrosis has been recognised…”

The salt therapy treatment “uses hypertonic saline solution inhaled through a nebuliser. Administered twice daily over an extended period, the therapy reduces the recurring complications of the disease, improving the quality and duration of life….The outcome of the trial was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine….Reporting on the trial Mark said, "The results of our trial were revolutionary. We saw a sustained improvement in lung function, a major reduction in the number of acute lung flare-ups, a reduced need for antibiotics to treat the flare-ups, and fewer days off school or work due to illness." The trial is the culmination of a decade of research overseen by Associate

Professor Peter Bye from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney.”

“Inhaling salt mist helps cystic fibrosis”

In the study the “effect of salt therapy (HT) was evaluated in 124 patients (pts) with various types of respiratory diseases…HT course consisted of 10-20 daily procedures of 1 hour…. In all of the patients (pts), the disease was in the stage of a prolonged exacerbation…The clinical state of 85% of the patients with mild and moderate bronchial asthma (BA), 75 % with severe BA, 98%- with chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis improved after HT. The pts were examined 6 and 12 months after the first HT course. No aggravations of the disease were seen from the 3d to the12th month. The average duration of the remission was 7.6-0.9 m. Most of the pts (60%) used no medication and sought no medical advice.”

“Speleotherapy: a special kind of climatotherapy, its role in respiratory rehabilitation”

Speleotherapy, the use of the climate of caves, is an accepted but not widely known therapeutic measure in the treatment of chronic obstructive airway diseases. This study summarizes the therapeutic experiences of more than 4000 patients who were treated in a 10-year period in a hospital-cave complex in Tapolca,Hungary. A sharp and long-lasting clinical improvement and a significant recovery from airway obstruction could be observed in the overwhelming majority of patients. It is established that the microclimate of some caves can beneficially affect these disorders, but the cave should be considered as an optimal environment for complex respiratory rehabilitation.

Study on the effect of speleotherapy at the Praid Clinic

Observations of studies conducted between 1995-1998:

  • ”77% of our patients felt better during the 4 hours of underground treatment
  • 22,7% of our patients felt the same way as outside
  • 0,3% of our patients felt worse than outside because of different reasons
  • after one cure of 3 weeks, 13% of our patients felt better for a year, 50% for 6 months, 30% for 3 months, 4% for a month and 3% felt better only during the cure
  • after one cure, 28% renounced on drugs for a period, 53% decreased the drug consume, 14% needed the same dose as before, for a period, then they succeeded to reduce the dose and 5% needed to increase their dose of drugs
  • between 2 consecutive cures in the salt-mine, the necessity of hospitalization in the territorial hospitals decreased in 73% of cases, comparing to precedent years, for 24% was the same and for 3% the hospitalization was frequent.”

“Halotherapy: Aerosol Salt Treatment of Respiratory Diseases”

Conclusion - Scientia Press Report Halotherapy has been shown in clinical trials of steadily increasing rigor to confer significant benefits in the treatment of asthma and chronic bronchitis. The failure of Western medical researchers to investigate it and of Western respiratory specialists to use it stems from various causes including unfamiliarity with the Russian-language literature, narrow focus on drugs, and general medical conservatism… HT is rather inexpensive--cheaper than speleotherapy and much cheaper than some competing drugs. It has minimal side effects in the case of halite HT and quite minor ones in the case of silvinite HT. There are no reports of interactions with drugs or of the development of microbial resistance to HT. And its close-to-nature character appeals to patients. HT's ability to perform as a mainline or adjuvant therapy in virtually all respiratory diseases makes it especially valuable. It also possesses untapped potential as a source of general prophylaxis and invigoration for healthy people.”

Polish salt mines provide help for asthma patients

“Wieliczka, which is 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Krakow has been mined for salt non-stop since the Middle Ages…For 500 euros (690 dollars) -- which is often covered by health insurance -- the mostly asthmatic or allergic patients can spend 14 days deep in the mine's microclimate, breathing the therapeutic air… The high levels of humidity and sodium chloride in the mine also help speed the regeneration of the Patients exercise in the Wieliczka Salt Mine mucous membranes, said lung specialist Marta Rzepecka. The treatment is effective in 90 percent of cases, she added. "We also see an improvement in the overall functioning of the respiratory system," said physiotherapist Dorota Wodnicka. "They have less feeling of asphyxiation. The children take fewer antibiotics and they have fewer symptoms," she said… Russian Liliana Prishchepa said she had brought her granddaughter from Moscow to Wieliczka on the advice of a friend from Ukraine who was treated here. "Her problems disappeared after just two stays," said Prishchepa, adding that she hoped for the same result for little Anastasia.”

” Salt of the Earth: Underground medical center harnesses the healing power of nature”

“Therapy is conducted in the form of daily sessions that last about six hours. A typical course of therapy takes 20 sessions. The cave’s medicinal effectiveness has been demonstrated by the experiences of more than 10,000 patients with asthma and other respiratory illnesses…Speleotherapy had a positive effect in particular on asthma patients. Thus, it was established on the example of 820 patients that the number of days they spent on sick lists during the year decreased eleven times on the average after they had taken a course of speleotherapy (from 66 to 6).”

“Salt mine Sanatorium - Gone to the Salt mines - Whatever for?”

“I am an asthmatic and went for speleotherapy” to “Troilus mine, at Tirgu Ocna near Slanic Moldova, Romania…Over 5000 people were treated in this mine last year alone. The Romanians are amazed that 'salinas' are not available in Britain… Although my bronchitis, sinusitis and asthma had not cleared on my arrival home after the three weeks (I had been advised that it takes longer in older people); a further dose of antibiotics, same variety, was prescribed (6 previous courses in nine months to no avail) when everything cleared up and two month later I was able to dance at our daughter's wedding. The literature points out that 'speleo-reaction' occurs in most people, they appear to get worse before they get better.”

"A London clinic has become the first in Britain to offer asthma and allergy sufferers salt therapy.” – Salt cave that ‘treats asthma’

"The therapy is being piloted by the Allergy and Asthma Drug Free Treatment Centre…Sufferers sit in a chamber which has its own micro-climate and is coated with salt. Particles of dry rock salt are ground up by a special machine and circulated around the chamber. These particles, invisible to the naked eye, penetrate deep into the respiratory system…are said to help reduce inflammation and clean out mucus blocking the airways…Those who have tried the treatment include four-year-old Toby Johnson from south-west London, who was diagnosed with asthma last year. His mother Hannah, 36, said that sessions at the salt cave… Lithuania, have helped his breathing. She said: "Toby was constantly ill and on antibiotics so the doctor put him on a Ventolin inhaler and a heavy dose of steroids. Then I heard about salt therapy through his nursery. "It's really improved his breathing and means he takes less drugs at night”… The treatment costs £35 for an hour and patients are advised to have between 10 and 20 sessions depending on the severity of their condition.”

”Britain's first therapeutic "salt cave" – designed to alleviate a range of respiratory and skin conditions”

“A "speleotherapy" air-conditioning unit rumbled away, pumping salt particles into the atmosphere as I dozed. Three-quarters of an hour in its presence is "equal to three days at sea", apparently, thanks to the iodine, bromine, magnesium, potassium and other minerals said to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Although the technology is less than 10 years old, it is inspired by 19th-century findings that Polish salt miners had fewer pulmonary problems than other people. Then, in the 1990s post-communist era, scientists in Poland started to explore the possibility of recreating similar micro climates above ground, which is when they came up with these salt rock panels, the backlighting and, most importantly, the air conditioning. Salt spas have taken central Europe by storm; there are now 200 in Poland alone… A 45-minute session costs £15. For further details, visit www.saltcaveltd.co.uk

“Ukrainian salt mines reinvented as a haven for asthma sufferers”

“Solotvyno's allergological hospital,…set among rolling hills near the border with Romania, started as a small clinic almost 30 years ago but is now a luxury complex serving about 6,000 people a year. Increasingly it is attracting customers from western countries… "Recently we've had people from Germany, the US and Poland," the chief doctor, Yaroslav Chonka, told the Guardian… Western experts remain sceptical, but staff in Solotvyno say a course of residential treatment is 90% effective in reducing symptoms for up to three years. Their method is known as speleotherapy: it employs the salt-permeated air of the working mine to dissolve phlegm in the bronchial tubes and kill micro-organisms that cause infections… Experts abroad remain doubtful…But some patients disagree. "This place is a godsend," Yelena Dietrich, a German whose 10-year-old daughter is having her first treatment at Solotvyno, told the AFP news agency. "Before, running was out of the question for her. Now she can run."
